Gel or Acrylic – Which Should I Choose?
The primary difference between UV Gel and standard Acrylics is only the method of application. They are in actual fact BOTH acrylics, just in different forms. UV Gel is pre-mixed and Acrylic (standard liquid & powder acrylic, aka "L&P") is mixed only just prior to application. Neither one is better than the other.
UV Gel is odourless, and has a great deal of flexibility with regard to colour mixing and patterns. It is applied to the nail and set with a UV lamp. Gels can be either soak-off or file-off (we offer a fantastic soak-off gel from Le Chat, particularly great for overlays)
Liquid and Powder Acrylics are known for their strength and durability, and can be soaked off using acetone. Unfortunately they do have a very strong odour that can be very unpleasant during application. These are still extremely popular
Sometimes, particularly for our work with nailbiters, we use a combination of these products. Standard Acrylic (either white, coloured, or glitter) can be applied to the tips for strength, and the body of the nail is comprised of UV Gel, which ensures minimal lifting and a smooth, weightless feel. Ask our nail technicians what they can suggest for you!
